Introduction

Sundarpani Tea Producers Cooperative Society was established with the objective of commercializing the tea farmers of its working area Suryodaya Municipality ward no 3 and 9  (former Fikkal VDC wards no 3, 4, 5  and Pashupatinagar VDC 1,2,3, 8, and 9) of Ilam district. The cooperative aims organic tea farming, processing and marketing of the produced tea, and promoting tea farming by providing proper training and advanced agricultural equipment to the tea farmers. This cooperative, which is operating by constructing an office building located in Ward No. 9 of Suryodaya Municipality, was duly established on 2063-06-08 by 25 members at the Cooperative Division Office, Ilam. At present, a total of 181 farmers, including 42 women and 129 men, have taken membership in this cooperative.

Embracing the principles of cooperatives and their basic values and norms, this cooperative is actively working to bring improvements in the living standards of its members, mainly through encouraging organic tea production, collecting and selling organic green tea leaves produced by its member, and providing financial and non-financial services. Currently, this cooperative has adopted completely organic farming methods and has also achieved organic certification. This cooperative is affiliated with the District Cooperative Federation, Tea Producers Cooperative Federation, Central Tea Cooperative Federation and National Cooperative Bank. Currently, the paid-up share capital of this cooperative is NPR. 5,966,600.00.

Nestled in the fertile and scenic landscapes of Ilam, this region benefits from a favorable climate, rich soil, and well-developed infrastructure, making it ideal for agricultural activities. Recognizing this potential, the cooperative was formed to increase farmers' income, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable farming practices. Over the years, it has actively supported 215 farmer-members from different communities, guiding them toward organic tea production and helping them access better market opportunities.

The cooperative plays a crucial role in the collection, sale, and distribution of green organic tea leaves, primarily supplying them to Gorkha Tea Processing Factory. Through coordination with the processing factory, the cooperative has successfully obtained organic certification, further enhancing the value of its produce. This cooperative remains committed to women’s empowerment by providing training, capacity-building programs, and equal opportunities for participation in decision-making.

Beyond tea production, the cooperative engages in various community development initiatives, including savings and loan programs, livestock improvement, compost manure production, and biogas plant construction. Looking ahead, it envisions expanding its reach by accessing cooperative bank loans to offer low-interest financial support to members, constructing a dedicated office building, and collaborating with government and non-governmental organizations to introduce impactful agricultural programs.
